KWU Expo 2023 : A Project to Increase Students’ Entrepreneurial Skills

Faculty of Public Health UNAIR has developed an entrepreneurship education model within its curriculum to increase students’ entrepreneurial understanding and skills. By holding the final project-based learning assignment, in the form of KWU Expo 2023. The expo is a form of implementation of the Entrepreneurship Course (KWU) which is being studied by engaging second-year public health students. The expo is also expected to develop the ability to innovate, creativity, and leadership for each student. It was held at Soemarto Hall & Central Gazebo on Friday, June 16, 2023.

Dean, Faculty of Public Health UNAIR, Dr. Santi Martini, dr., M.Kes. said that in lectures students not only learn theory but also need to follow the practice of entrepreneurship. Thus, this practice can be a benchmark of understanding for students in doing business. The implementation of the expo is relevant to the 1st SDG’s No poverty, the 4th SDG’s Quality education, and the 8th SDG’s Decent work and economic growth.

This expo was attended by 60 groups consisting of 7 students in a group. The sector of entrepreneurship displayed is also diverse, including engaged in Food and Nutrition Entrepreneurship for Nutrition Students Program and Integration Entrepreneurship for Public Health Students Program. The businesses displayed also varied, in the sector of  Food and Nutrition, among others, My Telangs (tea made from telang flowers), OatMeat (meatballs made from oatmeal), TUKAN (getuk made from fish). While in the sector of Creative Services and Business, for example, Literantah (aroma therapy candles made from used cooking oil), company profile and so on.

An interesting thing happened during the KWU Expo activity, one of the participant groups had successfully made a transaction to make a company profile, and in 10 minutes, they had managed to get 10 million rupiah. This is certainly an extraordinary first step considering they are students in the 4th semester.

Not only the expo but the event was also enlivened with talk shows from the alumni of FKM UNAIR and the students, who have experience in entrepreneurship. The first beauty class-themed talk show was presented by Fifit Eka Furi, S.KM., who is an alumnus of FKM UNAIR as well as the founder of skincare “Fureebeaute”, who shared her experience and tips in building the business.

The second talk show was presented by Fahmi Adimara, S.KM., M.KKK. and Jasmine Sylphia Valentine, alumni of FKM UNAIR, who shared their experiences as Content Creators and Influencers.

The last talk show was presented by Faradyah Lulut Santosa, a student of Nutrition 2019, who is the owner of a culinary business “Dessert.me7”. She started the business in 2019 when she was still a freshman. In the talk show, Fara shared her story as well as tips for developing her business. She also invited all students to continue this entrepreneurial endeavor after the completion of the Entrepreneurship Course lectures.

Fara also persuades students not to hesitate and be afraid in starting a new business. Students need to take advantage of the facilities provided by Universitas Airlangga, one of which is the Directorate of Career Development, Entrepreneurship Incubation and Alumni (DPKKA) which provides the Airlangga Collaborative Entrepreneur Camp (ACEC) program and the Student Entrepreneurship Development Program (P2MW). In addition, DPKKA also provides UNAIR Halal Center facilities that can support the process of making products halal for free for students.
