The material given by the speaker, Dr. Vaidehi Ulaganathan is discussing “Food Acculturation in Migrant Population”.

In the guest lecture, Dr.Vaidehi delivers the information about food acculturation in the migrant population which happens first when there is a transformation in food pattern and consumption, especially in the micro population. The most important things for the migrant population is access to food, stability of the food chain, and the availability of complementary breastfeeding food. The problems among the migrants have the ability to change their food pattern because of the migration. These changes are leading the migrants to health problems such as obesity, coronary heart disease, and many other non-communicable diseases.

Government and society need to work hand in hand to make policy and strategy to tackle problems happening among the migrant population. Government and society also have to apply justice and protect the safety of the micro community. There will be obstacles in terms of implementing the policy such as, accessibility, availability, and capability in preparing for the food needs.

Things that need to be executed by society community is to empower the migrants, helping to manage databases by ensuring the organized traditional food availability and building community peers to support migrants psychological needs so that the local community and the migrants will all be benefited. By executing these actions, the local community will help the migrants to change their food pattern according to the state they lived in and to be healthier by implementing a new food consumption pattern. Food acculturation in the migrant population also can add more culture to the food itself.

The presentation and discussion had been going for almost 2 hours. The participants look focused on and pay attention to the material given by the speaker really well. After the presentation, the schedule was continued by a documentation session and closure. The event finished at 3 pm.
