AGTS X GENIUS 2023: Education and Movement to Providing Nutritious Food for Elementary School Students in East Java

AMAZI Goes To School (AGTS) X Gerakan Edukasi Pemberian Pangan Bergizi (GENIUS) is a form of collaboration between the Faculty of Public Health (FKM) Universitas Airlangga together with AIPGI, the Deputy of Food Insecurity and Nutrition, and National Food Agency (BAPANAS). GENIUS is a work program implemented to increase elementary school students’ knowledge about nutritious food, as well as maintain and improve the nutritional status of elementary school students to support the Golden Generation 2045. The target of this program is 25,000 students in 50 districts/cities in 10 provinces. FKM UNAIR through Lecturers, Students of the Bachelor Nutrition Study Program and the Association of Nutrition Students (AMAZI) will represent and implement the GENIUS Program in 5 Districts/Cities in East Java Province, namely Sidoarjo, Kediri, Tulungagung, Blitar and Probolinggo City.

AGTS X GENIUS will be implemented in 4 stages, which are Baseline, Thematic Education II, Thematic Education III and Endline. The baseline stage was carried out on Friday, October 6, 2023, in public elementary schools in Probolinggo City, and Monday, October 9, 2023, in 4 districts/cities, namely, Blitar, Kediri, Tulungagung, and Sidoarjo. Thematic Education II will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2023. Thematic Education III on Monday, October 30, 2023, and Friday, November 3, 2023. The end line stage will be held on Friday, November 10, 2023, and Wednesday, November 15, 2023.

Each student will receive nutritious food made from animal protein sources. This activity is accompanied by food and nutrition education. The provision of nutritious food is done by eating together at school which will be implemented in 10 provinces where the percentage of Prevelance of Undernourished (PoU) has not reached the national target. Nutrition education is also carried out by involving parents so that they are accustomed to sustainably providing nutritious food.

Each student will also take anthropometric measurements, and fill out a questionnaire guided by an enumerator. Completion of this questionnaire is also carried out by parents of students at their respective homes which will later be returned to the homeroom teacher a maximum of 3 days after the questionnaire is distributed.

The GENIUS program is not only implemented in East Java Province, but also in nine other provinces, such as Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, South Sumatra, West Java, Bali, North Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, and West Sulawesi. Thus, around 25,000 students in primary schools are expected to benefit from this program. The ultimate target of the GENIUS Program is to increase the nutritional knowledge of school children and maintain and improve their nutritional status, in preparation for Indonesia’s bright future in 2045.
